This week, we talked about the exponential power of daily action and taking daily action steps to gain the 10,000 hours of expertise!
Question: When you’re working toward a goal, how do you celebrate the steps along the way to that goal?
Here, on Positive Psychology News Daily, Nicholas Hall gives a summary of some ways to celebrate steps. He breaks out possible celebrations along two axes: body-mind-spirit and pleasure-engagement-meaning. Some suggestions:
- Go dancing (Body and Engagement)
- Learn something you’ve always wanted to (Mind and Meaning)
- talk to a friend (Mind and Engagement)
What is your list of small celebrations?!
Thanks!
Great weekend!
I’d love to hear your answers. Feel free to leave anonymous comments. My answers are in the comments also.

How do I celebrate steps toward a goal?
* Dancing!
* Going to a music concert on the weekend, especially a free one
* Taking time on the weekend to just chill on a couch and reeeeeaaaaad!
* Go visit a friend nearby
* More reading!
* Write a short story
* Brainstorm business ideas leisurely
* I mini-brag about those celebratory steps to friends!
Thanks for citing me!!! :)
I had been thinking about my matrix that I created. What if it’s just a one-axis grid: pleasure, meaning, engagement? That would make it a bit easier to come up with stuff perhaps.
Pleasure:
ice cream
good meal @ favorite restaurant
take a nap
get a massage
take a nice hot bath
Engagement:
bike ride – exercise
take some time to read
go to an art museum
walk in the woods/park/amongst nature
watch a favorite tv show on TiVo
play a video game
Meaning:
talk to an old friend/relative on the phone
spend time with your pet
organize your home/work space (some people like to reward themselves in this way – I do!)
engage in a small goal-related task that you enjoy or is fun
Remember: these are little rewards for process goals, and are meant to be small and enjoyable. There are a lot of things that can go under these categories, and we want to limit it to small, fun activities to reward ourselves with.
Have fun!
